Anthropic’s Claude doesn’t have the brand recognition of ChatGPT. It hasn’t been the subject of the same cultural moment or media coverage. But among professionals who use AI seriously — lawyers, analysts, writers, developers — Claude is frequently the preferred tool.

The reason comes down to a few specific qualities: it produces more natural, nuanced written output; it handles very long documents exceptionally well; and it takes a more careful approach to accuracy and honesty than some competitors.

This post examines what Claude actually does, where it outperforms other AI tools, and what kinds of businesses get the most value from it.

What Claude Is

Claude is an AI assistant built by Anthropic, a company founded by former OpenAI researchers who left to build AI with a stronger focus on safety and reliability. Claude is the product; the underlying technology is Anthropic’s Constitutional AI approach, which trains the model to be helpful, harmless, and honest.

You can access Claude at claude.ai, via the Claude app, or through Anthropic’s API for developers building custom AI applications.

What Claude Does Particularly Well

Handling very long documents. Claude’s context window — the amount of text it can read and reason about at once — is among the largest of any major AI model. This means you can upload an entire contract, a lengthy report, a research paper, or a long email thread and ask Claude to analyse, summarise, or answer questions about the whole thing. Many AI tools struggle with length; Claude handles it well.

Natural, considered writing. Claude’s written output tends to sound more human and less generic than some competitors. It avoids the slightly stilted, over-structured quality that can make AI-written content immediately recognisable. For businesses that care about brand voice — a law firm’s client communications, a professional services firm’s reports, a business owner’s blog — this quality matters.

Complex reasoning. When tasks require holding multiple considerations in mind simultaneously — weighing trade-offs, identifying nuances, explaining subtle distinctions — Claude tends to perform well. It’s less likely than some models to give a confidently wrong answer on a complex question.

Honesty about uncertainty. Claude will tell you when it doesn’t know something rather than generating a plausible-sounding but incorrect answer. For business use, this matters — you want an AI that flags uncertainty rather than masking it.

Sensitive and professional content. Businesses often need AI help with communications that require careful handling — a difficult client email, a policy document, a response to a complaint. Claude’s training makes it good at navigating these situations thoughtfully.

Where It Fits Against ChatGPT and Gemini

These tools overlap significantly — all three can draft emails, summarise documents, and answer questions. The differences are at the margins, and for most everyday tasks, any of them will serve you well.

Claude tends to be preferred when:

  • Documents are very long or complex
  • Written output quality matters significantly
  • The task involves nuanced reasoning or sensitive content
  • You’re building a custom AI application via the API

ChatGPT tends to be preferred when:

  • Integration with Microsoft tools is important
  • You need image generation (DALL-E)
  • You want the most widely supported ecosystem of plugins and integrations

Gemini tends to be preferred when:

  • You’re deep in the Google Workspace ecosystem
  • Real-time Google Search integration matters
  • You want AI built directly into Gmail, Docs, and Sheets

The API: Building Custom AI Applications

Beyond the consumer product, Claude’s most significant offering for businesses with development capability is its API.

The Anthropic API allows developers to build applications powered by Claude — custom AI agents, chat interfaces trained on specific business knowledge, document processing pipelines, and automated workflows.

W3IT uses Claude’s API as the foundation for custom AI chat agents built for client websites. These agents are trained on a specific business’s services, FAQs, pricing, and processes — so they can answer customer questions accurately and specifically, rather than giving generic AI responses. They can also qualify leads and hand off conversations to a human via WhatsApp or email.

For businesses that want AI integrated into their specific operations rather than just a general-purpose assistant, the API is where the real power lies.

A Real Business Use Case: A Marbella Property Agency

A property agency in Marbella handles significant volumes of contracts, legal documents, and client communications across multiple languages. Before AI, reviewing a contract or preparing a client summary required significant time from senior staff.

With Claude:

  • Contracts can be uploaded and summarised in seconds, with specific clauses highlighted
  • Client-facing summaries can be drafted in the appropriate tone and then reviewed
  • Email responses to complex client enquiries can be drafted with the appropriate nuance
  • The API could power a chat agent on their website that answers questions about the buying process, local regulations, and available properties — in multiple languages

The time saved on document work alone can be significant. The improvement in responsiveness to client enquiries can be commercially meaningful.

Pricing

Claude.ai free: Access to Claude with usage limits — sufficient for occasional use.

Claude Pro: Around €18–20/month. Unlimited usage of Claude, access to the most powerful models, extended context for very long documents, and priority access.

Anthropic API: Priced per usage (tokens processed). Pricing varies by model tier. For building custom agents with moderate usage, monthly costs are typically modest — often less than €50/month for a small business chat agent handling typical enquiry volumes.

What Claude Is Not the Best Choice For

  • Real-time information. Like most AI tools, Claude’s knowledge has a training cutoff. For current information with sources, Perplexity is better.
  • Image generation. Claude can analyse images but doesn’t generate them. For image generation, DALL-E (via ChatGPT) or Midjourney are more appropriate.
  • Deep Microsoft 365 integration. If your team lives in Outlook, Word, and Teams, Microsoft Copilot’s native integration is more practical.

The Honest Assessment

Claude is not the right tool for every business or every task. But for businesses that work with complex documents, produce significant written content, and care about the quality and accuracy of their AI-assisted work, it’s often the best choice.

And for businesses that want to go beyond off-the-shelf AI tools and build something specific to their operations, Claude’s API is the most capable foundation we’ve found for that work.
